Roger Lowery began his career in 1968, as the only financial representative in southwestern Illinois. He talks about how he entered the career.
"I bought my first Northwestern Mutual policy in 1965. Every year I’d get together with my representative to review the policy and he had me talk with the managing partner about opportunities. I was selling pharmaceuticals and hospital products at the time, influenced by others when I should have been trusting my gut. My representative and the managing partner got me very excited about Northwestern Mutual, so three years later I made the decision to come on board."
"Starting as a young representative, I saw an excellent opportunity to build the area. And it turned out to be a life changing career opportunity."
After three years as a financial representative, Lowery began training and educating new representatives and was pleased to find that his passion was guiding others. Upon realizing his talent to educate, he seized the opportunity to become managing director, allowing him to wear both hats: setting an example for representatives by leading in production and being a source for information.
Roger eventually brought his son Christopher into the business and his son succeeded him as The Lowery Group's managing director in 2007 when Roger returned to personal production.
He talks about the career:
"The greatest reward is the independence, virtually unlimited income opportunity and the impact I have had on so many individuals."
"The career has its challenges, too, such as doing the things you have to do in this business every day. It is easy to become sidetracked and distracted. Early in my career, I realized I lacked organization and discipline."
"But along the way, I gained a lot of confidence and learned that I am very good at some things and to delegate the things that I was not good at. I learned that it takes a team to be very successful."
